THE RUNAWAYS
As a very little kid, I had a turtle who ran away from home. Leonard escaped from the backyard, only to be returned weeks later after someone found him in their garden and remembered the “lost turtle” signs we had posted in the neighbourhood.
Years later, he would crawl into my sister’s backpack. She would discover him at school, and I would spend the day carrying him around in box, refusing to let people touch him or pick him up.
One summer (somewhere around the year 2000), I came across a turtle crossing a busy four-lane boulevard, dead-centre through the middle of the crosswalk. I was on my way to work at a city park. I placed the turtle into my backpack and continued on my way. At the park, I set the turtle free near a stream. The first thing it did was take a very long drink.
